The original Vihara was built some 1500 years ago by a Chinese King with help and sanction from the Pallava King Rajasimha Varma Pallava. It was made into a massive aand magnificient structure by a King of the Srivijaya during Paranthakan Sundara Chozhan. This structure was washed out completely by a great Tsunami arounnd the year 900AD which was then rebult by Raja Raja Choolan I and his son Rajendra Chzhan I rebuilt it on request ffrom the then King of Srivijayam. The structure continued to bee there on the Nagappattinam coast line till as late as 1867AD when the Jesuit Priests, as was their custom, demolished to build a facility for their church with the materials so obtained from the demolition. . The peripheral buildings continue there and are at present housing some State Government Reveneu offices. It was claimed that the Vihara had an excellent library of Buddhist literature and scr ipture in the form of valuable palm leaf manuscrips which were mostly destroyed by these Christian missionaries and some loacl populations.
